Oak Stave and Paduak Gift boxes
Made one of the boxes from 52 Boxes in 52 Weeks by Matt Kenney for holiday gifts. The sides are cut from used 8ft oak barrel staves, the top from padauk, bottoms from poplar and painted with old fashioned milk paint co.
Besides initial resawing at the bandsaw, everything was done by hand. The lids were the trickiest with the reversing grain, caused a lot of tear out, and I eventually changed design because of it. The bottoms are two pieces glued together: an insert that fits in a bottom rabbet in the sides, and thin flat bottom. The combination creates the floating gap. Some of the gaps are a little bigger than others, would probably go smaller in the future. Boxes are finished with Tried and True Varnish Oil.
