HawaiianIslands.com looked at America's popular attractions on TripAdvisor — ones with more than 980 out-of-state reviews — to see the difference of opinions tourists and locals had when it came to the iconic attractions in each state.

They compared average trip ratings from in and out-of-state visitors to see which American attractions were the most polarizing.

Key Takeaways

  • Mount Rushmore had the biggest rating disparity between the two groups — on average, tourists rated it 4.6/5, where locals' average rating was 4.17/5.

  • Los Angeles's Venice Beach was rated better by locals, at 3.95/5, than tourists, who rated it 3.63/5 on average.

  • The ten top-rated tourist attractions according to locals include:

    • Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah
    • National Museum of the US Air Force, Ohio
    • Gettysburg National Military Park, Pennsylvania
    • Portland Head Light, Maine
    • Preservation Hall, Louisiana
    • Waimea Canyon State Park, Hawaii
    • Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum, Oklahoma

The comments here are classic. The reason they chose the listed sites is literally given in the second sentence of the article. But of course the comment section is full of geniuses wondering why one site was selected or another ignored...

As someone who grew up in Michigan I find it offensive that they even bothered putting something like comerica Park in there at all I forgot until now that was even in Michigan, where's the sand dunes? Not one of them made it in really? Sleeping bear and silver lake are HUGE tourist areas and we went often! And you put in fort mackinaw, but not the island itself? The island is an entirely different experience then the fort, the old timey feel with the horse drawn buggies the historic buildings and spending your day there on a bicycle! Plus the fudge ;_; God I miss the fudge; and you didn't touch Fayetteville? A ghost town is a huge tourist attraction! I don't think yall actually cared about real attractions in the state you just cherry picked fucking stupid ones, I mean I'll give you the Henry Ford museum and arch rock, very cool and fun, where the fuck is the 'garden and sculpture park'? I've never even heard of that... and where is mill city even? You couldn't talk about bronners and Frankenmuth? It's like a pilgrimage for Christmas lovers every year... yall suck at finding "tourist" locations...

I think it's more likely that they just didn't give a sht because, well, Michigan. I mean, when most of your "tourists" are people passing through your state on thier way to somewhere else, how much does it really matter??

So, the Grand Canyon wasn't listed for Arizona? But the Museum of Musical Instruments was? For BOTH locals and tourists? Wow...just Wow.

I'm surprised the Golden Gate Bridge isn't on this, it's lovely but many tourists may experience it on a grey foggy day, locals would seek it out in nicer weather and enjoy the beautiful views.

This map is wak Minneapolis Institute of art is in Minneapolis not where ever in the north land it's marked. Prolly 150 miles off silly heads.

  10. what an interesting sort of data- it seems there is an overlap of tourist to local in several places that do t make sense to me, but I haven’t been everywhere… I would be very interested to see this sorted by cost- free to most expensive (since i know there are some places that are accessible to everyone and others only if you have $$$- the difference between walking around Pike Place Market (free) vs The Museum of Flight ($$$) comes to mind- or perhaps the sort is public spaces vs private one- Waimea Canyon and the Bellagio Fountains are in Piblic spaces, like the Market. Super curious…

Your map shows Beauvoir in the middle of Mississippi. It is actually on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. Please correct that !

It's just pointing to the state. They are all like that, except the ones without pointers.

I live 30 minutes from the heads. Waaaay over rated. You look at it the whole drive/ride up from Keystone, then you get ther and think, I drive all this way, now what do I do? I feel like I have to at least look at it longer.

Preservation Hall surprises me the most.
Lived in New Orleans for 15 years and never once saw anyone local enter that place. Ever.
