Panhandle: High wind warnings and power outages
Xcel Energy is preparing for wildfire risks in northern Texas Panhandle and eastern New Mexico, with a potential Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) on Tuesday, Feb. 17, due to unseasonably warm, dry weather and high winds. Enhanced Powerline Safety Settings (EPSS) will be active from Monday to Thursday to prevent unplanned outages caused by damaged power lines. Customers are encouraged to prepare for potential outages by building a home emergency kit and considering backup power options for medically necessary equipment.
Looks like the panhandle is set for its first high wind warning of the season. Amarillo and surrounding areas may see power outages as Xcel intentionally shuts down power to prevent possible wildfires like the one from two years ago. Stock up some food and water!
