Tesla’s Robotaxi Crash Rate Is Way Worse Than We First Thought
Tesla’s Robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, has a crash rate of one incident every 55,000 miles, significantly higher than the human driver rate of one crash every 200,000 miles. Despite having a safety driver on board, the autonomous vehicles are involved in more accidents per mile than human drivers. Tesla’s reports to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are heavily redacted, lacking specific details on the crashes. The service, which Elon Musk predicted would reach half of the US population by the end of 2025, is currently limited to Austin, with plans to expand to seven new cities in the first half of 2026.
