Reviving old tech
I've had a fascination lately with giving a second life to older and outdated technology. Yesterday I pulled this old Lenovo Z570 IdeaPad out of the closet to see how well it could run Linux. I got this laptop in 2011 and it came with Windows 7, an Nvidia gfx card, I processor, and 6GB RAM. I went through 4 distros before finding one that wasn't too buggy (Linux Lite, Linux Mint, Lubuntu, Zorin OS).
Honestly, I'm kind of shocked at how fast and snappy Zorin OS runs on it. After finding a better Nvidia driver and making a few adjustments, everything works as it should. Anyway, I just enjoy geeking out over simple little things like this and I hope you enjoy reading about it. I really can't see any sense in throwing away a mint condition laptop with an incredibly high quality keyboard, excellent speakers with rich sound, and a beautiful screen simply because it has reached EOL in terms of Windows 11 compatibility. This is, again, a perfectly functioning laptop and it deserves a second chance over being tossed in a landfill.
