Ladybird indie web browser flutters toward Rust
The Ladybird web browser project, originally developed in C++, is now adopting Rust with the help of LLM-based coding assistants. This shift comes after a year-long delay due to the use of Apple's Swift programming language, which was ultimately abandoned due to limited C++ interoperability and platform support outside the Apple ecosystem. The project aims to rewrite parts of Ladybird in Rust, starting with the JavaScript interpreter, and has successfully translated 25,000 lines of C++ code into Rust in just two weeks.
