ZDNET's 2026 Dell laptop guide puts the XPS 14 at the top, but its broader list makes clear that the right machine depends more on portability, graphics needs and budget than on one universal winner.
After hands-on testing, ZDNET chose the XPS 14 as its best Dell laptop overall. The publication praised its lighter aluminum design, responsive Intel Panther Lake hardware and display options, including a 2.8K tandem OLED panel. Its testing found up to 16.5 hours of battery life with the IPS screen and a little over 13 hours with OLED.
The XPS 14 is aimed at people who want a portable premium computer for productivity and creative work. ZDNET's main cautions are price and integrated graphics: some configurations exceed $2,000, while demanding 3D rendering and similar workloads are better served by a dedicated GPU.
The smaller XPS 13 is the outlet's ultraportable choice, starting with a thin premium build and lower price. Its base 8GB of memory and two USB-C ports are the tradeoffs. Students get a different recommendation in the Dell 14 Plus, which combines a portable chassis, good battery life and solid everyday performance but carries a middling display and bundled software.
ZDNET recommends the Dell 16 Plus 2-in-1 for buyers who want a large convertible and included stylus, while warning that a nearly five-pound tablet can be unwieldy. Alienware's 18-inch Area-51 occupies the other extreme: high-end gaming hardware and storage in a heavy, expensive machine best used near an outlet.
Those distinctions are more useful than the ranking alone. The XPS 14 is ZDNET's balanced favorite, but students, frequent travelers, convertible fans and gamers each face a different compromise.
