@mitchellh Datadogs built in agent (Bits?) is absolutely great. Probably the only ai integration I saw that actually solves a real problem, and packaged in pleasant UX. It builds dashboards, reads metrics, have context of whats on your screen, previews changes and saves a lot of time.

@mitchellh 100% hating the "Ask me anything" in every other product. Especially products that did work perfectly fine and were strong contenders in their niche without the chat box. If the product was good, double down on what made it special instead of becoming a watered down ChatGPT!

@mitchellh Bring me your context to my setup is a far better UX and even tho it’s limited to power users I expect adoption to continue simply because of how much better it is I help non/semi-technical teams build context systems for marketing/gtm and you’d be surprised how fast ppl adopt

@mitchellh because the CLI/MCP version composes. a product's built-in chatbox is a dead end with one context window and zero memory of what you did five minutes ago somewhere else.

The case for your own public agent, on your .com. 0️⃣ First, the anti-case. If you haven't shipped high quality APIs for agents, start there. OpenAPI specs, SDKs, CLIs and MCPs as appropriate. 1️⃣ Convenience. Not every customer has a harness 'at the ready' for every possible interaction with your product and company. Shipping one on your own domain covers a lot of spontaneous requirements. 2️⃣ Security. When you go to 𝚟𝚎𝚛𝚌𝚎𝚕.𝚌𝚘𝚖 and talk to Agent, we put in the work to cover audit trails, a least-privilege permission model, and extra assurances to ensure security, privacy and data integrity. It's fully cloud-based and sandboxed, vs. a sprawl of static credentials on users' machines. 3️⃣ Proactivity. We're still in the "human enters prompt" phase of AI. Our cloud-based agent can act on anomaly alerts triggered by exceptions, attacks, usage spikes. Our agent needs to monitor your infra while you sleep. You can, of course, set up workflows and schedules with your own harnesses, but it gets much harder. I think it's ultimately a sequencing thing. Using a generic agent harness (e.g. Codex, Claude, OpenCode) + CLI/MCP is better than "Ask me anything" built-in product chat boxes in every product I've ever tried. A big reason is I can use the latest frontier models, another is mixing more context. Why your box over mine?
