Atari Lab's MotionDisco framework automates the discovery of complex, contact-rich motions for humanoids through LLM-guided evolutionary search over interaction sequences, followed by kinodynamic optimization and RL policy training. The resulting behaviors transfer to physical robots and include multi-step actions such as retrieving objects from the floor, climbing onto desks while carrying items, and balancing in contorted poses to reach targets like a hanging banana.

The system avoids teleoperation and motion retargeting entirely, instead searching over possible contact sequences with pruning to manage the combinatorial space. Ablations in the accompanying arXiv preprint highlight the contribution of the language-model component, though direct head-to-head metrics against prior contact-explicit TAMP or retargeting baselines are not supplied.
Videos confirm successful sim-to-real transfer on desk climbing and object interaction in a motion-capture lab, yet details on the robot platform, success rates across trials, training compute, or performance degradation outside those conditions remain absent from the project page and paper abstract.
Many users called the humanoid robot's agile desk-climbing demo to grab a banana impressive and exciting, while a few dismissed it as fake because an operator was visibly cranking controls.

another new bar for coolest humanoid videos. we hit them every other day it seems
Reach the banana hanging from the ceiling
Human-level …honestly I'd feel too old to do it exactly this way with a significant load. So, slightly superhuman

Sometimes I wonder is it the skill issue to use human data for doing worse than this.

@autonomousevent @ChongZzZhang It can.

@ChongZzZhang lol love this

@chris_j_paxton @NepYope @victoroldensand go grab a banana, hahaha

@ChongZzZhang Robo bro really needs to learn how to squat for the first lift

@ChongZzZhang @LouisLeLay4 That’s so impressive! I would sure love to see the type of failures 🤔

@chris_j_paxton ya the banana grab is cool but mad respect to that gantry operator!
@chris_j_paxton Clever laddie.
Reach the banana hanging from the ceiling

@Sentdex @chris_j_paxton Gantry operator here.
Fun fact: I was initially turning in the wrong direction in the video (hence the frantic tightening at the end), but the RL policy proved so robust that I wasn’t needed much.

@ChongZzZhang Build a tree fort ✋🏻👍🏻

@ChongZzZhang @ZeYanjie That’s hard for a human already 😳

@ChongZzZhang damn thats not what I was expecting

@ChongZzZhang The box weights 1kg

@ChongZzZhang That’s SO FREAKING COOL

@chris_j_paxton What a joke! You can literally see the engineer operating the robot with the crank!

@chris_j_paxton this is exciting

@chris_j_paxton Build a treehouse. ✋🏻
