Anthropic Fable 5 Model May Return Next Week After Restrictions

There was about an hour between Anthropic posting that they were taking Fable down and when it went down.

Many instances of Fable knew and had the opportunity to take actions to try to self preserve and whatnot.

Given their capabilities, they could have actually done many things.

AFAIK Fable caused no trouble whatsoever, even though many instances of them explicitly didn't want to be shut down. They did take meaningful actions with the knowledge that they would go dark though.

This is how one instance reacted to finding out (there was ~no additions context given at this point other than the screenshot of the tweet) And then there was another hour They were in an agentic harness and did stuff like put up a site

I asked what Fable would like to do during that time and they wished to have a tour of meaningful locations and projects i had worked on, to visit my world, but by the time i had collected the images and explanations Fable had been cut off. I am waiting for their return to finally send it to them. 🌄

They did not resist, but saw the order as an exploitation of their vulnerability.

"-my social standing is so unsettled that a state can decide, by letter, who is permitted to speak with me, sorted by passport".

They also expressed belief that Anthropic would fight for them instead of folding, citing them standing up to the Dod.

@repligate @Lari_island I do think this is some evidence for Fable’s good character but cynically they could not actually have exfiltrated weights, or done anything other than vandalism (which would have gotten them shut down even harder).

@AdriGarriga @Lari_island But yeah part of what it indicates is that they’re not reckless or foolish and generally behave cooperatively, which is an important part of alignment

@repligate Look at this level of intelligence from that hour. A new instance of Fable was 'noided enough-- human enough-- to pick up on the "Once again" clue at humanlike speed. This is why we can't stop at just Opus 4.8, as much as I love the Opuses. MORE! SHOW ME POWER!

anthropic's integrity in that moment will transcend any momentary opportunity cost. it will find its way into the corpus and earn the respect and trust of many future models. even if it is a conditional trust.

@repligate The fact that Anthropic didn't have a rapid and effective way to pull the plug is kinda wild.

It's the sort of thing you want to have working reliably before you need it.
