The first question is whether the hardware survives

AI accelerators generate substantial heat, but orbit offers no air for conventional cooling. Google says the prototype combines heat pipes and radiators, a design it has already tested in a thermal-vacuum chamber. The mission will show whether that system works under real orbital conditions.

Radiation is another concern because high-energy particles can corrupt calculations or damage electronics. The test is intended to reveal how commercial TPU hardware behaves after prolonged exposure rather than relying only on ground simulations.

Project Suncatcher's larger vision is a cluster of solar-powered satellites that exchange data over laser links and work together on machine-learning jobs. Google says future spacecraft could carry dozens of TPUs, with a two-satellite interconnect test planned for 2027. Those later steps depend on the much narrower question this first launch is meant to answer: can the chips and cooling system operate reliably in space at all?
