A lot of it, probably the majority is not real. It’s social contagion leading to over diagnosis and some element of the Victim Olympics, looking for a medical reason to justify bad or dysfunctional behavior. Some of it is real. But it’s impossible to know how much. But there are multiple lucrative incentives to get a diagnosis. We will look back on this era as one of massive overdiagnosis and over medication. Remember there are no objective tests for these conditions. It’s all symptom checklists and clinical judgment. Any intelligent and motivated person with resources can get almost any psychiatric diagnosis they want. A little googling, a little doctor shopping, and voila! You have whatever medicalized justification you want for your interpersonal or professional or financial problems.
@GergelyOrosz Omg, this is so REAL. It literally explains me. Not sure I’ll go through the formal diagnosis myself - it won’t bring any improvements to my life, but I know why things were as they were.
@GergelyOrosz Yawn. Sit in front of a machine all day and be something designed for cave dwelling. = Adhd
@GergelyOrosz I was diagnosed with ADHD five years ago, and it explains so much about my life today.
@GergelyOrosz Fortunately my partner is neurotypical so kid was spared the suffering
@GergelyOrosz N+1 Explains so much about my career it’s crazy.
To be clear I’m not arguing for meds nor do I want to offer any kind of medical input It’s fascinating to learn about different ways different brains work as I learn more about this area tho, with all its pros and cons

Met the nth person working in tech who figured out they have ADD / ADHD (+some got a formal diagnosis later) while diagnosing their kid with it and realizing (or their partner realizing) many/most symthoms is apply to them as well since childhood and it explains so much now
