This is an important move.
Open source maintainers are no longer just supporting software.
They are supporting the infrastructure layer that AI systems increasingly build on, modify, secure and automate.
As AI coding scales, the question will not only be whether models can generate code.
It will be whether the entire software trajectory remains trustworthy:
dependencies, maintainers, reviews, releases, security, provenance, and long-horizon project intent.
Open source needs support.
But it will also need stronger observability.
Because when AI starts operating across codebases, the risk is not only a bad commit.
It is trajectory drift across the software supply chain.
