There’s been much discussion recently on the ethics of autonomous weapons, and how they should be used to deter or wage war in a moral and just manner. As Christians in defense technology, @traestephens and I know the seriousness of these questions. America is in a technological arms race with its adversaries and AI is central to that race. Just War Theory can and must be applied to new conditions and technologies, with the use of arms resting on the enduring principles of proportionality, right intention, legitimate authority and last resort. America’s approach to combat has long been deeply informed by this tradition, even during previous periods of technological disruption on the battlefield. If the U.S. falls behind in AI or pauses critical defense technologies, we will not inherit a world without war. We will inherit one where our adversaries wage war on their terms.
