Tesla just unveiled its new Roadster with a flying backflip

Yahoo Finance described the maneuver as a backflip and cited a one-second 0–60 mph time.

The hardware behind the backflip

For the airborne Rocket version, Tesla describes a fan-powered suction system capable of holding the car upside down even when stationary. Fans pull air from beneath the vehicle to generate downforce, while cold-gas thrusters make rapid adjustments to stabilize it in flight.

The moving bodywork has a connection to Tesla’s humanoid robot, too. Tesla says its Track Mode aerodynamics use the Optimus actuator system to move the wings, and claims the passive downforce package approaches Formula 1 levels.

Three versions, different capabilities

Tesla’s product page separates the Roadster into three configurations:

• Performance: A two-seater with active aerodynamics and a suction system for driving on and off the track.
• Thrust: A two-seater with rear-mounted cold-gas thrusters. Tesla claims it can reach 60 mph in under one second.
• Rocket: An invite-only single-seater with thrusters around the car for upward, forward and rotational movement.

Tesla explicitly says the Rocket version is not approved for public road use. Its airborne features are limited to that version, which the company says will not be available in every region.

Musk targets production in 2028

The reveal comes after years of delays. Tesla first showed the second-generation Roadster in 2017 and took deposits of $50,000, with some customers paying $250,000 for a Founders Series reservation, according to TechCrunch.

Musk now says Tesla will build the car in 2028. He did not announce a final vehicle price at the event.
