Dean and Will Depue frame this as a matter of funding Promethean, Randian innovation that (implicitly) grows the total pie at maximum speed. It's not clear to me that it does. And it's pretty clear to me that this leads to labs becoming singularities not just in the technical but in the economic sense, getting rich enough to blatantly buy out or acquire-via-service all current valuable enterprises (say, all of Pfizer's alpha), and entrenching their oligopoly margins across all surfaces. From Xi and Wenfeng's perspective, diffusion-first (with more value accruing to compute producers and inference providers, and still more to downstream users) might be the preferable route, because it both avoids this concentration of illegitimate power and because it grows the pie faster. 0.1% of the expanding light cone should be plenty enough to train frontier LLMs. After all, what use is all this intelligence if it doesn't round down to zero in the grand scheme of things it puts into motion? This is the logic of infrastructure investment, and although the state model clearly has a better answer to "who pays for the roads" than Ayn Rand, the idea that roads are valuable only insofar as they help stuff move from point A to point B should be comprehensible to all. As to what path looks more prosocial, you make the call. I know what my heart tells me.
