I'm of two minds about whether to mention this, but a teenager who built something his friends could use to circumvent the UK's social media ban would probably end up with a very rapidly growing startup.
Y Combinator co-founder Paul Graham says a tool to bypass the UK's proposed social media ban would see rapid startup growth
Story Overview
Paul Graham floated the notion that a teenager who built a quick workaround for friends could ride surging demand into a fast-growing startup, as the UK prepares to bar under-16s from major social platforms starting in 2027.
Workarounds tend to appear quickly
History shows users often route around new limits on communication tools, though no concrete bypass product tied to this rule has surfaced yet.
The outcome hinges on enforcement details
How strictly age checks and circumvention rules are written will decide whether such a tool faces easy adoption or immediate pushback.
Positive users praise the teen's tool bypassing the UK social media ban as a clever startup opportunity created by regulation, while negative users dismiss it as unoriginal or attack its supporters.

Indeed, maybe the social media ban will turn out to be the policy to encourage the founding of startups that governments dream of. Stranger things have happened.

It would be amusing if the key turned out to be to fork Android. Then Apple's walled garden would end up hosing them after all, after decades of seeming to work.

@paulg Actually, they have greater intelligence. We assume social media is a desirable place to be. They are more likely to bypass algorithmic and platform directed feeds all together, and share NoteSubs instead, for communication and knowledge transfer https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/notesub/id6742334239

@paulg Hey I have this! called VLATUA 🤟😃 download it and create your private in class paper.. or family paper.. or just "my books" paper idk. It's like having a different twitter profile for every hobby or event. Everyone creates their papers and mute papers instead people 👍

@cperciva I have two. That's why I'm of two minds about mentioning it. But in this situation I think the outcome, whatever it turns out to be, will be inevitable.

@LiberN8 @paulg Worth every penny, sir.

@paulg Democracy is great but governments do what they can to hide their incompetence, reminding them to focus on real issues bypassing censorship is a good thing.

Not against the idea, but just for the record are you willing to cover their legal fees when OfCom comes after them?
I've seen plenty of people suggest this, and I feel like that might be why - I assume you know how much bureaucratic nonsense anyone who does this will be forced to go through from before you re-based to the US?

@morajabi @paulg nope. 18+ verification in iOS, for apps and web browsing
@paulg Like the parent who bans their child from reading past bedtime...

@ajrgd @paulg I'm not quite getting what you mean, in countries with such restrictions even 10 yo kids have VPNs and techniques to bypass the filtering pretty easily. They can create Apple IDs with fake birthdays, VPN software have age ratings as low as 4, etc.

@getdownmidtown @paulg I can be a real tough customer. I just want you to know how much your work contributes to the success of this entire organization.
You have a bright future ahead of you if you continue at this pace. Your parents must be very proud.

@paulg I’m already on it. Claude is figuring out how to spoof camera inputs as we speak.

@LiberN8 @paulg Noted, sir. 😂

@ArdaTors @paulg word salad
if you're coining new senses of words, you need to define them

@ArdaTors @paulg >redefines paper >doesnt give any hint as to what its new meaning is >gets mad when called out
you were lying anyway

@LiberN8 @paulg Fair. Will continue to earn my keep.

@paulg If it lived on the dark web?

@paulg Only to be banned after becoming a real startup.

@shitpost9000 @paulg you don't like words, huh?
