It seems plausible to me the biggest long term advantage the leading labs might be able to secure is performance @ price because they have the time and means to iterate on efficiency. It's interesting that they are not doing so now. The margins do seem less enticing.
Today they are primarily competing on peak capability. It's certainly possible they can do this forever, but as more and more tasks get pushed down the cost curve, I wonder about long term viability of this as sole emphasis.
