AMD and Anthropic said Wednesday that they have struck a major AI infrastructure deal: according to CNBC's report on the announcement, AMD will invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic, while Anthropic will deploy 2 gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 GPUs in AMD Helios rack-scale systems. Reuters, via Yahoo Finance, reported that Anthropic will buy up to 2 gigawatts of MI450 chips starting in the first half of 2027, in a deal worth tens of billions of dollars.

WSJ: "Advanced Micro Devices and Anthropic have signed a deal for tens of billions of dollars’ worth of artificial-intelligence servers, strengthening AMD’s competitive position against industry leader Nvidia and supplying Anthropic with much needed computing power. Under the terms of the agreement, Anthropic will purchase up to 2 gigawatts of AMD’s latest-generation chips, called the Instinct MI450, starting in the first half of 2027. AMD will also invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic—its first check into the AI firm—as certain deployment milestones are met."

It has sent data-center employees to Texas and advertised infrastructure roles in Austin, Bastrop and Conroe. Supermicro’s CEO said his company was helping SpaceXAI build “another new Gigawatt AI datacenter” within a year, although he did not disclose its location. This makes SpaceX one of the most significant oracles in history and the most important hyperscaler.

The company is also reportedly discussing a financial backstop for Anthropic’s future data-center leases. The capacity is urgently needed: surging demand has forced Anthropic to limit usage, while some customers have reported frequent outages. Lisa Su: “You actually have to plan, you know, 12, 18, 24 months in advance for what you want.” This is very important for us. More computing power means that, in the long term, Anthropic's biggest bottleneck will be gradually resolved.
