Pieter Levels posted about Hotelist.com, his project to aggregate real hotel reviews using AI and counter high ratings on platforms like Airbnb. He noted that removing negative reviews creates booking anxiety because users cannot verify listings. Researcher Ivan Vendrov quoted the discussion and highlighted the incentive problem of suppressing feedback after decades of e-commerce. 4 posts@patio11 surely there are incentive-compatible ways to surface negative information? (sure we might have to let go of having a positional ranking, but projecting a high-dimensional service like hospitality to 1 dimension seems silly to begin with)
very interesting incentive design problem that I'd expect us to have solved after 25 years of e-commerce. clearly there will be more consumer surplus long term if negative reviews don't get suppressed. so why aren't there super-profitable 'honest info-brokers'?
