OpenAI plans to test a combined Chat and Work experience in ChatGPT with a small group in the coming weeks, according to a subscriber email reported by Mayank Parmar at BleepingComputer and Ivan Mehta at TechCrunch. TechCrunch reports that selected users will give feedback before a wider rollout.
In the email quoted by TechCrunch, OpenAI describes an experience where users can bring in files and plugins and ask ChatGPT to build a website, create a presentation or do things on the web while they review and guide its work. The email says Codex will remain a separate experience in the ChatGPT desktop app.
One allowance for ChatGPT and Codex
OpenAI's Help Center says that starting in December, Plus, Pro and Business plans will share a usage allowance across ChatGPT and Codex as Work's agentic capabilities move into the main ChatGPT experience. Usage will be measured in tokens, the units of information a model processes and generates. More advanced models and complex tasks generally use more of the allowance; Instant chat will not draw from it.
Subscribers will be able to see their combined remaining usage and reset times under Settings โ Usage. At the limit, they can wait for a reset, upgrade their plan or buy credits to continue using eligible features, OpenAI says. The company expects most users won't need to wait for resets more often than they do now.
Separately, BleepingComputer reports that OpenAI doubled Work and Codex allowances for Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500 subscriptions effective Oct. 29. OpenAI's Help Center guidance gives no exact December start day or plan-by-plan token allotments.
