In the interview, Musk said a university degree was not necessary for his hiring judgment and even extended that point to high school. He treated graduation from a strong university as a possible indication of ability, not proof of it, and cited Bill Gates, Larry Ellison and Steve Jobs as examples of accomplished people who did not finish college.

A transcript and copy of the interview place the remarks in a 2014 Auto Bild conversation. Musk expressed a similar idea in a separate CNN interview that year, saying SpaceX and Tesla looked for “evidence of exceptional ability” and that grades were only one way to spot it.
