A Gigabyte RTX 4090 owner traced a series of random black screens to visible damage on the official power adapter bundled with the graphics card, VideoCardz reports. The display reportedly went dark while audio continued, prompting the owner to inspect the power connection.
The owner said the card had been limited to 80% power to reduce heat and energy use and add a margin of safety. Against Nvidia's 450W reference rating for the RTX 4090, that setting works out to roughly 360W. A lower software limit, however, does not by itself establish what happened at a physical connector.
The damage was concentrated at the adapter
The system used a 2021 Corsair RM1000x power supply without a native 16-pin GPU cable, so the card relied on the multi-8-pin-to-16-pin adapter included with the Gigabyte RTX 4090. According to the owner, the power-supply-side plugs and PCIe 8-pin connections appeared normal. Visible damage was concentrated around one contact on the adapter, with a white mark also visible inside the connector on the graphics card.
The owner reportedly noticed the issue before a more severe failure, ordered a Thermal Grizzly WireView monitoring device and began looking for a replacement cable. The report does not include an independent inspection, a manufacturer diagnosis, the card's final condition or a warranty decision.
One report cannot establish the cause
RTX 4090 power connectors have a documented history of damage reports. In a November 2022 update, Nvidia said it knew of about 50 cases globally at that time and that connectors not fully seated in the graphics card appeared to be a common issue. The company advised plugging the adapter firmly and evenly into the card before installation.
That earlier finding is useful context, not a diagnosis of this case. The new account shows that the owner reported damage while using the bundled adapter and a reduced power target. It does not establish whether seating, wear, the adapter, the socket or another factor caused the damage, nor does it demonstrate how often similar failures occur.
