Chamath Flags Data Center Backlash Risk in Ohio
Investor ties AI messaging failures to rising opposition in Ohio and other states.
Chamath Palihapitiya posted that backlash against data centers has reached Texas, Pennsylvania, and now Ohio. He called it a powder keg that could unwind 200-300 basis points of annual GDP if it spreads and blamed frontier AI leadership for failing to paint a positive picture of what AI can achieve. Daniel Jeffries separately argued that AI leaders caused the backlash by focusing on jobs and x-risk stories instead of countering fear-based narratives.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee sent a private memo yesterday to US AI companies warning them that the GOP is on the verge of losing Ohio over data centers, and unless something is done to improve public perception, political support will collapse nationwide.
