Ireland's Data Protection Commission has fined Google €403 million after concluding that the company breached the EU's General Data Protection Regulation in its handling of location data.

The regulator said its inquiry examined how Google processed information through Web & App Activity, Location History and Android's Location Accuracy feature between May 25, 2018, when the GDPR took effect, and Feb. 4, 2020. The case began in February 2020 after complaints from European consumer organizations, including BEUC.

According to the DPC's decision announcement, Google must bring the processing covered by the ruling into compliance within six months. The commission is Google's lead EU privacy regulator because the company's European headquarters is in Ireland.

Location information can make services such as maps and search more useful, but it can also expose sensitive details about a person's movements. That tension is at the center of this decision: the fine concerns historical processing, while the compliance order sets a deadline for the company to address the regulator's findings.
