New Politico reporting fills in the 24 hours behind the Fable 5 / Mythos 5 shutdown, and it's messier than the press releases. And two sides contradict each other.
- The first alarm to the White House came from Amazon CEO Andy Jassy (The Information confirmed that yesterday), who flagged that Fable's guardrails could be bypassed.
- He was answering a government request for feedback, and per Politico he wasn't the only one. By Friday it had reached Bessent, Cyber Director Cairncross and Commerce Sec Lutnick, who pulled Amodei into three calls.
- From there the two sides don't agree on anything. The White House says export controls were a last resort after hours of trying to get Anthropic to cooperate.
-Anthropic's camp says it got a 90-minute deadline to kill the models, no threat detail, no offer to work it out.
Officials were reportedly stunned that Amodei, who has compared his own tech to a nuclear bomb, wouldn't pull it over a known hole.
I assume that Anthropic will release more information on Monday and further strengthen their position.
NEW: Inside the 24-hrs before WH slapped export controls on Anthropic - Last Thursday, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy raised concerns about Fable jailbreak to Trump admin - Friday AM, Sean Cairncross, Bessent, Susie etc. held WH call to discuss - Then White House started reaching out to Anthropic to speak with Dario Amodei, who was at a wellness retreat. - When Amodei was finally available past 1pm, he had three tense phone calls with a combo of ppl including Cairncross, Bessent, Lutnick, Kessler, Will Scharf, Richard Walters, and Walker Barrett. -Amodei tried to clear up what he assumed was a misunderstanding. He defended the guardrails and distinguished between universal and non-universal jailbreak - Cairncross and Bessent were unmoved and asked Amodei to take down Fable and work with the admin to fix the vulnerabilities. (A WH official said Amazon’s findings were run past the NSA and they felt they had “proof.”) - Amodei asked for more time and info, but he made no commitments to pull the model - Bessent told Amodei directly at one point that he was making a “bad decision” - By Friday evening, the Trump admin imposed its export controls. - “Export controls were a last resort after begging them for hours to work with us,” senior WH official said.

My prediction: a huge correction across everything in cloud and tech. Panic in Washington, because half of DC is invested in cloud, AI, and tech. Amazon, NVDA, and SpaceX all take a hit , I’m saying 10 to 20 percent. Investors start calling for Amodei’s resignation. A lot of pressure, a lot of people trying to save face. This decision got made on emotion, both sides. I don’t think there was a real national security issue here. I think the real problem is that Amodei likes to stick it to the Trump administration, and they’re not happy about it.

Buried lede: officials were “stunned” Amodei wouldn’t pull a model he calls a nuclear weapon. You don’t get to market doom for the valuation, then call a known exploit no big deal when they believe you.Pick a lane. And someone’s 90 min vs-“hours” timeline is fiction ,that one’s checkable.

@kimmonismus the real story here is that Amazon flagged a competitor's safety issue while responding to a government survey if Jassy had the same bypass data on Bedrock would he have volunteered it with the same urgency or buried it in the next quarterly audit
