Could printing money to buy AI lab equity actually be good economic policy?

@SamoBurja:

"The US government has been printing trillion-dollar bills like it's no tomorrow, mainly to make sure the stock market doesn't go down. That political incentive is massive and it's not going away."

"The question is, well, who gets them?"

"If I told you the US government was investing a trillion dollars into data centers, that would seem like good industrial policy... if it buys equity in OpenAI or Anthropic at market value, I'm pretty sure they're gonna use it for employee compensation and for data centers. Not that bad actually."

@hamandcheese Printing a trillion dollars and paying it to AI companies in exchange for equity might be the best economic stimulus the U.S. government can carry out and might yet prove a vastly better investment than say the infrastructure bill was.

Users criticize Samo Burja's proposal for the US to print a trillion dollars for AI lab equity because it would bypass market and budget constraints through inefficient and unfair government support.

@MTSlive @SamoBurja Contrarily, I see this as a good short-term strategy, but in the long run as astraightforward recipe for a zombie AI industry.

@MTSlive @SamoBurja E.g. neither the market nor budget constraints will tell us if OpenAI will be the leading company, because if it starts to decline, the govt will simply buy more shares, and OpenAI won't beat its competitors by investing that money efficiently, but rather by being dumping them.
