Correct. You want safe models? This is what you do. Tons of software we use everyday is made by people of all nationalities. When it's indispensable for American National Security, we invest in locking it down. You do not need to ban technology that can be made safe.

@parkerconrad No one is saying @thinkymachines shouldn't be able to release open weight models. You're conflating two things on purpose to muddy the waters. It just shouldn't come at the cost of stealing years of American research like PRC companies are doing.

@parkerconrad The provenance panic misses this: weights you can download and run air-gapped answer to whoever holds the GPU, not the training flag. The real leverage isn't where it was trained — it's who controls the endpoint you can't inspect.
