Apple reportedly testing iPhone Duo 2 prototypes with Face ID beneath outer display

Apple is testing iPhone Duo 2 prototypes with Face ID beneath the outer display, according to 9to5Mac’s Benjamin Mayo, citing Mark Gurman’s Power On podcast. The report describes prototype testing, not a confirmed feature for a phone that will ship.

In his Oct. 22, 2026, article, Mayo wrote that the first-generation iPhone Duo uses Touch ID instead of Face ID and was due out the next day. He said the switch to Touch ID drew complaints from early reviewers, quoting 9to5Mac reviewer Chance Miller calling it “the hardest thing to get used to.”

Mayo also reported that Gurman described employees exploring ways to bring an Action button to a next-generation Duo, though Mayo portrayed Gurman as less confident about that possibility. Mayo cautioned that testing Face ID does not guarantee it will ship in the following year’s model. He also wrote that it was unclear whether Apple would keep the power-button Touch ID sensor if it added Face ID.
