Researchers Release Scalable Fluid Engine for Artificial Life
A new project called Microcosmos is being pitched on X as a physically grounded, scalable simulator for artificial-life research.
In a post on X, Kenneth Stanley said the ALife Institute's Microcosmos aims to give artificial-life research the kind of scale that helped drive modern AI, describing it as a more scalable substrate for artificial-life experiments. The public announcement trail is still mostly social: a repost of Ciaran Regan's paper announcement described Microcosmos as a scalable fluid engine for artificial life, and Stanley said the early experiments hint at what could happen if artificial life gets a more powerful substrate.
I’ve long believed that artificial life has the potential to benefit from scale just like AI has.
Commentary on X
Highest ranked@ciaran_regan_ @kenneth0stanley this is great. I've been building a little virtual creature out of thin strands and the way filaments bend is doing all the work of making it feel alive — never occurred to me you could make that whole thing differentiable. reading tonight
