Philosophy & Public Affairs has adopted a policy prohibiting substantially AI-authored submissions. Associate editor Seth Lazar stated the journal formulated the rule after publishing Simon Goldstein's largely AI-written piece without an existing policy in place. Lazar, who was not involved in that publication decision, described himself as generally pro-AI and an active user of frontier models. The policy targets cases where AI plays a substantial role in authorship. Lazar added that paraphrasing generated content would violate the spirit of the rule but is harder to enforce due to complex causal histories of ideas.
