I'm back at Riot to help lead development of AI experiences. There's a lot of skepticism about AI's place in gaming, but I believe the future is in the hands of those willing to experiment.

Many users objected to Brendan Mulligan returning to Riot Games to lead AI experiences because they view generative AI as harmful to creatives after recent layoffs and call it snake oil or cancer in gaming.

NGL I'm still one of those skeptics, especially regarding generative AI. I think AI holistically can have some cool benefits like improving Bot combat or procedurally generated terrain or even using ML like the Nemesis system. I just hope you guys conscious about the impact of the training data on creatives and the enviroment

@Spideraxe30 absolutely man. riot's special sauce has always been insane creative talent, the LAST thing I want to do is kill that spirit. you can help keep us honest but I think we will be able to honor them while providing new experiences that genuinely benefit players.

@BrainEngineer 👎

@BrainEngineer Feels like more companies atm are waking up to actually how expensive it is once its not being subsidized. Flipside if things continue to get worse in the hardware space there won't be any players since they'll be priced out of gaming.

@BrainEngineer congrats on the job - i wish it was in any other position. generative AI has 0 place whatsoever in a creative field. Rioters already struggle to get their creative visions heard - shoveling AI into the workflow to fill investor's pockets will never spark joy or creativity.

@BrainEngineer ofc you believe in it bro u get paid to push this dogshit literally no one wants except corpos to save costs on paying people to do their job

@BrainEngineer Nobody wants AI in their games. It's heartless passionless soulless slop. Art requires the human spirit to be impactful. It's no more a "tool" for an artist than ordering McDonald's is a "tool" for a chef. The best part of riot is their art direction and hiring of real artists.

@djalmajao valid response. keep the feedback coming as you see what we make, if it sucks we will stop!

@BrainEngineer Yeah, im sorry. Im glad you're happy in your new position, but I just don't see the value in engaging with AI, generative or "experiential." Any product created via AI is a direct replacement for human capability, even if there is an "artist" or "dev" behind the AI prompts.

@BrainEngineer i just want a game where all the npcs are powered by llms, so it can be a living breathing world instead of scripted responses.

@BrainEngineer If that has anything to do with the generative ai that functions through the theft of all literature, code, art, music and internet content, I'll wash hands of riot's games.

@BrainEngineer Nah man, we dont want this. Even if its not GENAI, involving more and more AI tools simply opens the path for more intrusive AI. Yall have to be careful or you will lose a majority of your players.
I want a commitment, now, that there will be ZERO genAI incentive pushed by you

@BrainEngineer Riot already struggles enough creatively. Their artists are all they have. Having AI help in any capacity will make it an absolute joke. I give it a week before they backpedal on this like every other company who announced this garbage.

@Spideraxe30 @BrainEngineer I knew riot is already using AI but still, very disappointing stuff. I'm much much less interested in future riot games, but hey I got a huge backload of old games still to play and other companies who don't use AI who I can support, so guess I just won't be the target audience

For those of you who hadn't heard the news of Liminal winding down, here is what I shared a few months ago about what went wrong, and why I'm as optimistic as ever about the future.

@BrainEngineer I respect you as a human, but despise AI with every fiber of my being, if Riot goal is to respect players desires, I as a player, desire your work to fail and crumble, and I understand how this may seem like a personal attack and I apologize if you feel offended

@BrainEngineer There's a lack of effort from developers to showcase AI features and development that goes beyond the questionable ones like gen AI used for images or as a replacement for voice acting
I think AI could be a lot more than that but I'm yet to see it showcased, hence the skepticism

Riot's insane talent and focus on players is what brought me back and the first week has already been insanely energizing. I'm fired up!

@BrainEngineer I’m still one of those skeptics. Many companies haven’t used AI in a meaningful way. Ofc there’s the glaring problem of generative AI and its ethical impacts on creatives and the environment. I sincerely hope you and the team continues to keep that in mind.

@BrainEngineer The only goal of ai is a corporate dream of eliminating human labor
Stop with false promises n gaslighting
