Apple and Microsoft took very different routes to “Duo” foldables
The iPhone Duo uses one folding screen, while the discontinued Surface Duo joined two separate displays with a 360-degree hinge.
TLDR
Apple’s iPhone Duo and Microsoft’s Surface Duo share a name but little else. Apple’s 2026 phone is a clamshell foldable built around one flexible display. Microsoft’s 2020 Surface Duo and 2021 Duo 2 used two separate screens joined by a 360-degree hinge, prioritizing side-by-side multitasking but drawing criticism for unreliable software and awkward phone use. Engadget notes that Apple’s claim to the name also predates Microsoft: the company sold PowerBook Duo laptops from 1992 to 1997 and later released the MagSafe Duo Charger.
