TLDR

On October 5, 2026, OpenAI said it would add invisible watermarks to eligible ChatGPT and Codex text output in the EU over the following weeks. API customers worldwide could opt in for select models starting that day. OpenAI says detector access will initially be limited to approved researchers and expert organizations because detection can miss watermarks or produce false positives.

In the EU, we’ll start watermarking eligible text from ChatGPT and Codex over the coming weeks to comply with the EU AI Act. Customers using our API can turn on text watermarking for select models worldwide today.5h
