Microsoft released emergency fixes for Windows 11, its PC operating system, on Sept. 14, 2026, after September’s security update disrupted remote connections, virtual-machine folder sharing and USB audio. Microsoft says the updates repair Remote Desktop Services failures, missing shared folders in certain Linux virtual machines and problems with multichannel USB audio.
The Remote Desktop bug could prevent connections or sign-ins and leave affected systems unresponsive during configuration. File Explorer and the Windows Update page could also stop responding, according to Microsoft’s release notes.
The folder-sharing problem affected applications using Plan9 to make Windows folders accessible inside Linux virtual machines. Microsoft names Claude Cowork and Windows Subsystem for Linux among the affected applications; standard Hyper-V virtual machines that do not use Plan9 were unaffected. Microsoft’s issue report marks the problem resolved by the Sept. 14 update.
Which USB audio problems remain?
Some USB Audio Class 1.0 devices can still fail to start or produce sound. Microsoft says the update fixes failures in eight-channel and 3D audio modes, but other symptoms remain, including a Code 10 error in Device Manager, stuck volume controls and unresponsive sound settings. The company says it is working on a resolution.
