Valve's Steam Machine gave one teenager a route into PC gaming without beginning at the Windows desktop. In a firsthand PCMag account, senior writer Gabriel Zamora describes setting up the system for his 16-year-old, who wanted PC games but had little experience maintaining a computer.

The appeal was not only performance. SteamOS boots into a controller-friendly interface and keeps most system complexity out of view. Zamora says his son signed in with a QR code and could immediately use games from the family's existing library through Steam Family Sharing. He notes that the slot operates at about 100 MB/s, so a standard UHS-I card can be more sensible than paying for a faster card the machine cannot fully use.
