Energy Shortage Emerges as Main Bottleneck for AI Data Centers

The biggest bottleneck will be energy- very soon.

Gartner's 2026 forecast puts global data center electricity at 565 TWh, up 26% from last year. AI servers already account for 31% of that and pass conventional servers in 2027.

What's worth noting is the constraint Gartner names: it's power, not chips. They project demand above 1,200 TWh by 2030 and warn the grid won't keep up.

So the race quietly shifts from who has the best silicon to who can actually get the electricity to run it.

Users agree there is almost no other solution to energy shortages bottlenecking AI data centers than scaling inference in space.

I think that's why @elonmusk basically said screw it, put compute in space, which also fits with @alexwg Dyson Swarm framing ...

are these fantasies, or are current AI power forecasts excluding orbital compute because it still sits outside what grid, energy, and infrastructure planners consider plausible on the relevant timeline?

@kimmonismus Hyperscalers restarting old nuclear plants and planting SMRs next to their data centers. Goldman Sachs is calling for 85-90 GW of new nuclear by 2030 just to keep up. This is the next race in AI and it’s not even AI.

@MaaSonder Without energy, no ai. It’s that simple

@mrdj1968 @elonmusk @alexwg I agree. There is almost no other solution to this problem than scaling inference in space.
