Theo's Video: Real Codebases Outgrow Single Minds

Theo posted that grasping an entire codebase signals the project lacks real importance.

TLDR

Theo stated that real software always exceeds what one brain can hold, so complete comprehension of a codebase indicates the work is not significant. He attached a video to the post. A reply from Theo advised another user to watch the video before commenting. Visible replies discuss moving to specification-level work while letting AI handle details, the growing value of architecture ownership, and how languages and libraries already serve as abstraction layers. The conversation stays within replies to the original post.

@theo@adhdShipper Pro tip: If you watch the video, you'll look less stupid when you make posts like this. If you understand the entirety of your codebase, your codebase doesn't matter and your job isn't real.
@TFWNicholson@theo You can understand your entire codebase without understanding all your code. The importance of owning the architecture has only increased (from essential) in the AI era.
@taheerBuilds@theo TLDR; Abstraction is ultra villainised due to vibe coding … but isn’t every library and language essentially a layer of abstraction like how python uses C internally and is an abstraction layer . Systems and patterns are everything
@CapetlevraiPure vs « impure » engineering -> must watch
@darekgustoWith how Astra and Fable are such a big step forward, that's currently one of the things I focus on: Stop worrying about knowing every little piece of my codebase. Instead of being a bottleneck, stick to working on specs level and let AI cook. I'm still far from being an AI power user but I'm on my way. At least to move closer from 2025 towards early 2026 now. I mean, 2025 feels like so many years ago!
