Hegseth said the effort is not meant to generate new policy documents, but to examine the domains the U.S. must conquer and the capabilities it must master. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has announced Project Meridian, a Pentagon initiative focused on the future of warfare.

Axios reports that the effort will be led by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, Anduril founder Palmer Luckey and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Hegseth unveiled the project during an address at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia.

Hegseth said Meridian is not intended to produce new policy documents. Instead, he said, it will examine “the domains we must conquer, and capabilities we must master.” He also said the group’s work will center on “discovering, developing and fielding the weapons and systems that our children and our grandchildren will need in their lifetimes.”

According to Axios, the leadership group was expected to meet for the first time on Wednesday. Hegseth said final findings are expected in 120 days, with both a public rollout and a classified report planned.

The Pentagon has separately described Project Meridian as an initiative to identify the technological needs of future wars.
