@DKThomp the clips are the content etc

@Noahpinion The established media destroyed their own reputation due to their TDS. Making room for social media to come in. I still remember when ABC’s reporting on Trump’s “good people on both sides” after Charlottesville and then reading the actual speech transcript. That was eye opening

@DKThomp News from Social Media gives more structural competition, but much less curating and quality control. It puts those burdens on the reader. Can I trust news from X as much as from the NYT?

Yes, we live in a 10-10-80 nation... 10% on the left are in a bitter war with 10% on the right. The 80% are trying to keep their heads down and avoid getting caught in the crossfire.
The angriest voices on social media are 10 percenters. Their primary focus is on beating the other team.
The 80 percenters are the best hope for America's future

@Noahpinion Noah, YOU ARE SOCIAL MEDIA

@DKThomp Fwiw I am one of the ones who gets vast majority of my Derek Thompson content via your writing and podcast.

@DKThomp Well, and that’s reflective of the broader trend across many industries, right, where power users drive revenue growth but represent a fraction of the total ‘eyeballs’ generating ‘engagement’ within any content production ecosystem (games, sports betting, sports, etc)

@DKThomp Your tweets are the advertisements for your essays and podcasts. We see all the ads, but only read/listen to the essays and podcasts that sound the most interesting from the tweets.

There are so many high quality substacks out there now. I am subscribed to about 5, but I rarely have time to read them. Unfortunately! I am afraid of missing a key idea, so I skim twitter to get information from multiple people faster. I can listen to podcasts on my commute at least.

@DKThomp I have *maybe* 45 minutes/day to absorb news, happenings, and vibes from the outside world. Love your podcasts but it’s always a trade between a narrow podcast or getting the broad signal from a curated X/twitter feed

@DKThomp Considering the lies coming out of the legacy media, I think people no longer cares. The legacy media would never show the video from Belfast. On the contrary. They want to shut it all down.
The sooner they are all out of business, the better.

@PorpoiseInLife I'm glad you fucking noticed, sir

@Noahpinion Trump is a moderate

@DKThomp We are getting exponentially dumber

@DKThomp @brianstelter Unfortunately what gets shown or disseminated is controlled by an algorithm, and many times that news post, if wrong or God forbid contains more than one tweet, there's no guarantee someone will see the retraction or even read the full thread

@Noahpinion Agreed. I think traditional media led the way. Their partisanship made it an easier transition. If you have to listen to propaganda, at least social media allowed people to choose the voices they listen to.
They’re poor choices.

@DKThomp Now you know why conglomerate media and government are pushing to snuff out social media. They know State Media has no credibility

@Noahpinion most disturbing to me is how it's drawn people's attention away from local happenings (not even just politics) and made them spend energy on national or global issues that aren't even affecting them directly. Huge waste of cognitive effort.

@Noahpinion An unfortunate number of people get their news from videos of girls in their car taking to their phones

@Noahpinion Probably a lot of truth but we can’t discount how some pretty terrible people are taking over ownership and management of mainstream media.
