Apple is reportedly developing prototypes for a screenless health-and-fitness tracker that would resemble a Whoop band more than an Apple Watch. The company has not decided whether to release it, according to 9to5Mac's account of Bloomberg's reporting, and any launch would not come before 2028 if the project moves forward.
The reported prototypes use a thin fabric band with a sensor-equipped computing module. That is a different premise from a conventional smartwatch: Whoop-style wearables are built around continuous health and fitness tracking without a display, while the Apple Watch combines those functions with notifications, apps and other general-purpose features.
Still a research project, not a product announcement
The report describes the work as being in a technology-investigation phase. That matters because prototype development does not establish a shipping product, a final design or a release schedule. Apple has not announced the device, and the account leaves open whether the company will take it beyond its current exploration.
The potential category is nevertheless familiar. Display-free wearables such as Whoop and Oura are aimed at people who want health data without wearing a smartwatch. A screenless Apple device could test how much of that experience the company can separate from the broader Apple Watch, but the reporting does not say what features, price or subscription model Apple might choose.
For now, the useful distinction is between an early reported prototype effort and an Apple product launch. The former may signal where the company is exploring; it does not make the tracker a confirmed addition to the lineup.
