I just finished interviewing builders from the hackathon, and one conversation stayed with me.

When we talk about AI, it often feels centered around dominant languages and major tech ecosystems. But for many African communities speaking smaller-population languages, open-source AI is what makes it possible to build Spaces and models adapted to their local language, culture, and real needs.

@ClementDelangue Dude, one point: hire more people. If you want to grow, take risks and hire amazing people. Your job board looks sad — you should be hiring hundreds. If you grow, OSS grows with you. No need to sit on a pile of cash and overthink the future while you’re already lagging behind.

The 2026-2030 question mark is the real debate, and it quietly assumes the general-AI lead holds through then. From where I build, open weights already won the practical layer: my whole local pipeline runs without a usage meter, so I experiment in ways I never would when every call has a price tag.

@ClementDelangue Dunno, I'd be careful with such statements. The most of the open source models, are just distillations of the bigger models fine-tuned on a weaker/smaller model. If US models stop advancing, so will the chinese ones as they suddenly would be required to spend 50 times more theirs

The Meta line is too tidy. They didn't 'change course for some reason,' the market punished open-weights spend that had no visible return and they flinched. Open-source leadership compounds only while someone keeps funding it past the applause, and nobody in this framing is accounting for who pays.
