Saturday Night Live used its Weekend Update desk to satirize Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and the AI industry’s habit of warning about catastrophic risks while continuing to build more capable systems.
Cast member Jane Wickline played Amodei in the September 26 episode, wearing a wig and answering host Michael Che with increasingly dark, halting lines. At one point, Wickline’s fictional Amodei declared, “AI is the devil and I its maker.”
TechCrunch reports that the sketch drew on Amodei’s recent press appearances and a former Anthropic researcher’s warning that self-improving AI could threaten humanity. The lines in the segment were comedy written for Wickline’s portrayal, not statements made by Amodei.
The sketch targets a real contradiction in AI messaging
Wickline’s character says AI leaders do not condone what they are doing, then calls AI “a tool for building weapons” and asks the public to pressure executives to stop. The joke compresses a recurring tension: executives describe their systems as transformative and potentially dangerous while competing to release the next generation.
The segment also turns the industry’s medical promises into a bleak probability joke. Amodei has argued that AI could accelerate progress against major diseases within the next decade, while also calling for stronger safeguards around powerful models.
Comedy does not resolve that policy debate, but it does show that the argument has moved beyond technical and business circles. SNL treated the clash between promised benefits, commercial incentives and existential warnings as recognizable enough for a mainstream audience.
