@Teknium burnt up a couple hours today trying to get it to work from Mac to my existing install on a VM on local network. Just says "could not connect to Hermes gateway".

@Teknium @SumneshSalodkar Maybe the same security concerns as to why lots of people run harnesses on vps or dedicated machines? Updating Hermes with 100 commits daily while supply chain attacks everywhere is pretty scary. But I'm noob, maybe there's a way to address this.

That like I said originally, we did not expect that to be the most demanded use case.

Codex, Claude Code, and their desktop apps generally run locally, so we had no reason to believe everyone would want that day one.

Despite that, we built an early version of remote connections before launch, that we're rapidly getting up to speed.

It relies on the repo itself to build and will need to be synced with the actual agent for things to work, so it made sense to tie them together.

Now, we will have to untie them to make a lite client work, and it will take time.

I personally dont see what the disdain for having the agent installed locally matters, its like 20MB extra and inert unless you point it to the local agent.

@Teknium Maybe I will take another kick at the can trying to connect to Hermes running inside a proxmox lxc. I haven't been successful in any of my attempts so far.

@Teknium confirmed second /update in telegram after initial failed update did work on another hermes! (reported it bc it’s the first hermes update failure I’ve had after servers hundred updates :)

@m1k__3 @Teknium Same setup for me. Work perfectly with tailscale between home and CT, and nginx as reverse proxy ( one host for public ip and one for tailscale hostname ). Hermes agent did the config 😎

@Teknium any particular reason for not allowing remote-only backend for the desktop app? technically doesn't seem very challenging, so any other concerns?
