In the summer of 1990 at Microsoft just after the wall fell we hosted a group of young activists from some of the smaller former iron curtain countries. We took them to an OG Costco in Kirkland (we had free memberships from Microsoft). I seem to recall one of them joking that had they known of the store the wall would have fallen sooner.
And don’t get me started on explaining ATM machines and direct deposit. (There was an one in the cafeteria!)
Karl Marx would have changed his mind about capitalism if he was a Costco member and bought 32 sirloin steaks, 48 diet cokes, 10 rotisserie chickens, a 5L Kirkland box wine, a comically-large tub of mayo, 50 frozen burritos and a hot tub while only paying 5% above wholesale price
