Will Brown argues Anthropic's centralized AI vision consolidates capital, advocating instead for open, easily distillable models to lower costs

He dismissed geopolitical competitive narratives used to justify centralization.

of course i understand the second order effects. i just don’t agree with the world anthropic wants. i think it is darker, worse, and not nearly as safe as anthropic claims it is.

i much prefer a world where progress is slow and diffuse, yet uncontrollable. capital consolidation is one of the biggest factors driving capability speed. if the secrets are out and models are distillable by default, margins get compressed, clusters get smaller, inference is cheap, training runs focus more on specialization than god models. the world gets to build the ai future together.

i am unsympathetic to the arguments about china. they’re gonna build their chips eventually. we are racing to out-accelerate them and build an insurmountable lead and let a couple people be lightcone king in the name of western liberal values as a side effect. and then what? it’s dark. i will keep fighting against it.

I really, really want people to start being more specific about how this stuff happens. What? You're afraid China will prepare for your dastardly plan if it's spelled out on X? Just how subhuman do you think these Tsinghua engineering Ph.D CCP bureau cadres are? Out with it.

the argument is "claude is by far the best model and so the government will be forced to use it to strengthen the NSA and sow dissent amongst the chinese populace who will threaten a revolt and xi will be forced to capitulate which will weaken china's position on the world stage and the world will all use claude and everything will be safe and aligned and automated and center-left american and any threat to this new world order will be detected and vanquished by claude himself"

okay i deleted my reply cuz i was being an asshole and creating more heat than light. i apologize.

i too prefer a world where progress is slow and diffuse (and "uncontrollable" in principle yes, but not unconditionally). and restricting access to Fable 5 and calling for a pause seems in line with those goals. "training runs focus more on specialization than god models" is explicitly not frontier development, and in an ideal world i agree this would be encouraged & supported. i'm speculating here, but i think that Anthropic as an organization would agree. and i think their actions are in line with that.

but allowing unrestricted access to Fable 5 for frontier LLM development would be highly accelerationist. it would make progress more diffuse, yes, but also much much faster, and greatly increases the risk of a breakthrough that allows rapid progress on a highly misaligned model/entity. that would be very bad for the world and potentially the future of humanity, and i think it is extremely prudent to limit the chance of this happening.
