Many users slammed Anthropic's messaging and involvement in the US government case as misguided and harmful, calling the company untrustworthy and the actions stupid.
If it’s so unsafe there are plenty of Americans who would do bad things with it too.

@natolambert I mean, Anthropic was extremely clear in their post: they think this is a stupid af move and the provided evidence isn't substantial enough to issue such a dumb order. So, no, Anthropic very much told us.
@natolambert In typical cases, only things like exporting high-end weapons or to rivals will be banned. F-35 is stealth fighter jet that no other one can build, yet it is good for exporting. However, I would imagine if LM marketed F-35 as a national security issue, then it likely would be
@natolambert It’s fairly consistent with Anthropic messaging. I think it’s wrong and their messaging is incorrect, but it’s not obvious to me why (well-meaning, competent) regulators would do something different.

@natolambert IMO, tonight raises the stakes on the 2026 congressional elections. A republican congress will not provide oversight over this decision by the commerce department. A democratic one will (or at least could).

i don't think they can just ask to see the jailbreak, if any exists, as it could be classified or sensitive.
