ELON MUSK: “We’re going to have universal high income. We’ll basically just issue money to people."

"AI and robots are going to make so much stuff and provide so many services that they’ll run out of things to do for humans."

"Money will stop being relevant at some point in the future."

"AI won’t use human currency. It will care about power and mass: wattage and tonnage.”

ME: “So just as you’re becoming a multi-trillionaire, money starts to have less value?”

ELON: “Yeah, pretty much.”

@PeterDiamandis Worlds richest man says don’t worry about money. Sure bro, as soon as I start getting checks I’ll believe you.

@elonmusk

Elon, I think you may be right about the long-term direction.

If AI and robotics produce enough goods and services, money may eventually lose its central role.

At some point, the real currency may become energy, compute, matter, infrastructure, and access.

But the difficult part is the transition.

Technological abundance does not automatically create fairness.

Automation does not automatically create meaning.

Universal high income does not automatically preserve human agency.

If work becomes optional, society will need more than payments.

It will need purpose, dignity, access, and visibility into who controls the infrastructure that replaces traditional money.

The key question may not be:

will money matter less?

The key question is:

who owns, governs, and observes the AI infrastructure that makes money matter less?

Because if energy, compute, robotics, data, and automated production become the new foundation of civilization, then human freedom will depend on how visible and accountable that infrastructure remains.

Abundance is powerful.

But abundance without trajectory governance can still create dependency.

The future should not only make humans richer.

It should keep humans free.

Universal income is to maintain basic purchasing power among the great unwashed/disposable life forms that will still be alive when AI takes over all their jobs, which it will do. Why, you may ask, would AI/the elite want to do this? They need consumers. No good creating a system that makes shit cheaper than human workers, if those human consumers can't afford to pay for it?

@PeterDiamandis @elonmusk If everyone gets a lot of money, how will people buy a big house versus renting an apartment? 🤔

@PeterDiamandis @elonmusk is profoundly one of the dumbest or most rmanipulative human beings to have ever lived to say this kind of stupidity

@PeterDiamandis The hoarding billionaire who will murder 14+ million people, including 4.5 million children, and has already killed 750k with his DOGE cut, is GOING TO GIVE YOU FREE MONEY.

@PeterDiamandis @elonmusk If everyone is just issued money, won’t all currency become worthless?

We will still be competing for finite resources.

There will always be a pecking order.

@PeterDiamandis @elonmusk Yes. That is great. Having money is fantastic, I'm sure many would agree that having it solves a lot of problems, but this scenario doesn't address the issue of purpose. Ppl need purpose. It is essential. Bored folks with money and no purpose self destruct. Its our nature.

@PeterDiamandis That doesn't make sense ... All the stuff AI and robots make will still cost money, they're not going to magic up all this stuff from thin air ...

@PeterDiamandis I asked him if that meant that the workers that A.I. could not replace ( the professional caregivers & childminders) would finally be paid what they are worth. He did not even answer - odd?? /s

@PeterDiamandis @elonmusk Very ironic! 🥰What will you do with your trillion dollars? Build more XAI factories in outer space I guess? 😍

@PeterDiamandis Interesting idea, but it’s very speculative. Even with AI and robots, scarcity doesn’t disappear it just shifts. Money may change form, but it’s unlikely to become irrelevant anytime soon.

@PeterDiamandis funny part is he’s also describing the trade in front of us: if AI only cares about power and mass, the scarce asset is energy + physical compute, not fiat

universal high income sounds nice, but the choke point is who owns the grids, fabs, data centers, robots, not the dollars
