It’s a way for them to associate government ID to social media accounts under the guise of “protecting children.” They are inserting themselves into every Americans home and saying they know how to parent your kids better then you do. Rep. Thomas Massie called it out exactly right in that post you linked: too many Republicans were scared to vote against the nice-sounding title, even though it hands the government and big tech more control and destroys real privacy.
### Here's exactly why it's terrible for privacy (explained plain, no fluff)
The bill uses sneaky wording. It says in a few places "we're not requiring age verification." But then it creates liability for platforms if they "know or should have known" a user is a minor and didn't shield them from whatever content the government later decides is harmful.
That "should have known" standard is the trap. Platforms don't want to get sued into oblivion or hit with huge fines. So the safest, cheapest move for them is to verify the age of **every single user** — not just kids. They will push ID uploads, driver's licenses, passports, facial scans, or third-party age-check services on everyone who wants to post, comment, message, or even browse certain sites.
Once that infrastructure exists:
- Your real-world identity gets permanently linked to your online accounts and activity. - Every post, search, video, DM, or "disappearing message" can be tied back to you. - Companies hoard this sensitive data. It gets breached (it always does). Or the government subpoenas it later. - Encrypted and private messaging takes a hit because platforms now have rules and incentives to scan or weaken features to prove they "knew" ages and complied. - The bill even funnels constitutional challenges into one friendly DC court so it's harder to kill in the courts.
This isn't limited to porn sites. The broad "covered platforms" language and the liability hammer hit social media, apps, messaging services, and more. The EFF and other privacy groups warned exactly this: the bill pressures age-gating and checks across the whole internet, not just for minors.
### Why Republicans and MAGA should see this as the enemy (not "protecting kids")
You claim to hate the deep state, surveillance, and government-corporate collusion that tracks citizens. This bill **builds exactly that system** and sells it with the one issue nobody wants to oppose publicly.
It's the same trick as the Patriot Act: use fear (here, "kids and porn/grooming") to get the infrastructure in place. Once the age-verification machine and data pipelines exist "for the children," expanding it to adults for "safety," "misinfo," "extremism," or whatever the regime in power wants is trivial. Your anonymous browsing, political posting, research on sensitive topics — all gone or risky.
Massie and a handful of others got it. Most folded because the title made it politically radioactive to oppose. That's how these things pass.
This is the fascist surveillance state being built in real time by people who talk freedom out one side of their mouth while handing over the keys with the other. In a few years these fascists will be in jail where they belong — along with the corrupt Trump family and their cronies who enabled this kind of authoritarian overreach. The bill is heading to the Senate; it deserves to die there too.

Should’ve known. @RepChuck Fleischmann voted yea on the "KIDS Act" digital ID trojan horse. Age verification for one category is how you build the infrastructure for ID requirements everywhere. Right in line with his record of expanding the surveillance state and inserting government into our private lives.
TN-3 deserves a representative who reads the bill, not just the title. It’s past time he's had to justify his votes in a primary.

On the surface, the naming of the KIDS Act bill and the top line "it's just age verification to protect kids" seems to make sense just like the Save Act - "it's just an ID". Dig deeper and you see the real issues. The KIDS Act is the precursor to destroying your privacy on the internet. It starts with kids then all of a sudden everyone needs verification.
