Four Gemini 4 Argon agents defeated Minecraft’s Ender Dragon without human intervention, according to the researchers’ preprint submitted Oct. 15, 2026. The researchers say they placed the agents in a sandboxed survival world and gave them the goal of beating the dragon. They could monitor, pause or stop the run, but say they had no cause to intervene.
Each agent controlled a player through Mineflayer, an open-source library, and coordinated with teammates through in-game chat and shared memory, the researchers write. No one assigned roles or wrote game logic; the agents planned, wrote and debugged their own programs. Gizmodo explains that the agents used Mineflayer to script actions rather than play by seeing pixels and pressing keys. Engadget describes their teamwork as sharing tips, threats and mistakes.
Starting in a randomly generated world on Easy difficulty, the team wrote 2,783 programs and defeated the dragon in 27 hours and 14 minutes, dying 605 times along the way, according to the preprint abstract. The researchers say this is, to their knowledge, the first end-to-end autonomous Minecraft completion by AI agents using standard Mineflayer without pre-scouted seeds or other human-written game-specific tools. That claim is about this sandboxed challenge, not a demonstrated result on real-world tasks.
